There was a time when, amidst a prevailing Tinseltown trend of teetotalism, meditation and country retreats, Angelina Jolie could lay claim to the title of Hollywood’s wildest bad girl. True to form, however, when a new direction came into the beautiful actress' life it took the form of a total seachange. These days the Lara Croft star is a dedicated mum who combines caring for her extended family with charitable commitments around the globe. |
There has always been more to the bee-stung-lipped star than her headline-grabbing personal life and traffic-stopping appearance, however. Her onscreen talent has brought her two Golden Globes along with, in 2000, a best supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of charismatic sociopath Lisa in Girl, Interrupted.
Born in LA on June 4, 1975, to actor Jon Voight and former model and actress Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina and her older brother James were raised in New York by their mother after their father left the family.
Aged 11 she won a place to study at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute and went on to work as a model. Appearances in music videos for the Rolling Stones and Lenny Kravitz led to small film parts, and in 1995 she landed her first starring role in cyber-thriller Hackers, on the set of which she met her first husband, British actor Jonny Lee Miller. Eschewing a traditional white wedding the bride walked down the aisle wearing black rubber trousers and a white shirt with the groom's name written on it in her own blood.
Her 2000 wedding to Pushing Tin co-star Billy Bob Thornton proved equally unconventional. Following a whirlwind romance they made their vows at a Las Vegas chapel dressed in jeans and with Angelina sporting a Billy Bob tattoo on her arm.
A year on the pair adopted a seven-month-old Cambodian orphan, Maddox. Afterwards, though, the couple's lives seemed to drift apart with Angelina citing changing priorities as she concentrated on their son and charitable causes while he plunged into his music. In July 2002 she filed for divorce.
Following the breakup the actress immersed herself in her career and charity work. A UN goodwill ambassador since 2001 she has criss-crossed the world on behalf of the organisation, drawing attention to the poor.
In 2005 she added to her family by adopting a little Ethiopian girl called Zahara.
Her career continued to flourish and at the beginning of 2005 it brought a new man into her life, both on screen and off, when she co-starred with Brad Pitt, then still married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston, in Mr & Mrs Smith.
Although the pair initially denied there was anything between them, Brad's marriage to Jen ended and he was snapped squiring his onscreen partner on several continents.
In January 2006 the news broke that Angelina was expecting Brad's baby, and publicists' for both parties confirmed what the world had long since figured out - the pair were a couple. Their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, was born in May 2006. The family grew again the following March when the couple adopted Vietnamese orphan Pax Thien and there was more happy news in July 2008 when the actress gave birth to twins Knox and Vivienne.
