Pierce Brosnan's dashing on-screen image as 007 – as well as his generous real-life persona – have impressed the Queen. The 50-year-old actor, who most recently brought James Bond to life in Die Another Day – will be receiving an honorary OBE later this week.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw explained the rationale behind the decision to honour the star, who is patron of UNICEF in Ireland, with the coveted award. "As 007 in the last four Bond films, he has added style and glamour to the image of Britain overseas," he said, "But he has also worked hard behind the scenes in supporting an array of charitable causes. This award celebrates a truly remarkable achievement."

After hearing the news, Pierce said he was "touched by this unexpected honour." Commenting that he was lucky to be inspired by "passionate and courageous individuals" in his life, he added: "I hope I will continue to fulfil expectations for many years to come."

The Irish star joins other Bonds who have been recognised by the Queen, including Sean Connery and Roger Moore, who have received knighthoods.

Handsome Pierce will receive his honorary OBE - only UK citizens are eligible to receive full honours - from the British ambassador in Dublin on Saturday.
